Angles in polygons
What the inside angles of any polygon add up to, the size of each angle in a regular polygon, and exterior angles.
Why do bees build their honeycomb out of hexagons? One reason is angles. Each corner of a regular hexagon is 120°, and three corners of 120° fit around a point to make exactly 360°, a full turn. So hexagons fit together with no gaps. Regular pentagons cannot do this: their corners are 108°, and no number of them makes exactly 360°. Numbers like 120° and 108° are easy to work out. They come from one fact you may already know: the angles of a triangle add up to 180°.
Inside angles and triangles
The angles at the corners inside a polygon are called its interior angles, or inside angles. To find what they add up to, cut the polygon into triangles. Choose one corner. From it, draw a straight line to every corner that is not next to it. These lines are diagonals, and they cut the shape into triangles.
A pentagon is cut into 3 triangles this way, and a hexagon into 4. There are always 2 fewer triangles than sides. The two sides that touch your chosen corner do not get a triangle of their own. Every other side has one.
The angles of all the triangles together make exactly the inside angles of the polygon. Each triangle gives 180°.
Remember
Sum of the inside angles = (n − 2) × 180°
n is the number of sides. Subtract 2 to get the number of triangles.
| Shape | Sides | Triangles | Inside angles add up to |
|---|---|---|---|
| triangle | 3 | 1 | 180° |
| quadrilateral | 4 | 2 | 360° |
| pentagon | 5 | 3 | 540° |
| hexagon | 6 | 4 | 720° |
| heptagon | 7 | 5 | 900° |
| octagon | 8 | 6 | 1080° |
| decagon | 10 | 8 | 1440° |
| dodecagon | 12 | 10 | 1800° |
Example 1
What do the inside angles of a heptagon (7 sides) add up to?
- Number of triangles: 7 − 2 = 5.
- Each triangle gives 180°: 5 × 180° = 900°.
Answer: 900°
Four-sided shapes
A quadrilateral is any shape with four sides: a square, a rectangle, a kite, or a shape with four sides of different lengths. One diagonal cuts it into 2 triangles, so its four inside angles always add up to 2 × 180° = 360°.
Remember
The four angles of a quadrilateral add up to 360°.
Example 2
A four-sided shape has angles of 85°, 95° and 120°. What is the fourth angle?
- Add the three you know: 85° + 95° + 120° = 300°.
- Subtract from 360°: 360° − 300° = 60°.
- Check: 85 + 95 + 120 + 60 = 360.
Answer: 60°
Each angle of a regular polygon
In a regular polygon all the sides are equal and all the inside angles are equal. So you find the total first, and then share it equally between the corners.
- Find the sum of the inside angles: (n − 2) × 180°.
- Divide by the number of corners, n.
Example 3
This is a regular nonagon (9 sides). How big is each inside angle?
- Triangles: 9 − 2 = 7.
- Sum: 7 × 180° = 1260°.
- Each of the 9 equal angles: 1260° ÷ 9 = 140°.
Answer: 140°
| Regular shape | Each inside angle |
|---|---|
| triangle (3) | 60° |
| square (4) | 90° |
| pentagon (5) | 108° |
| hexagon (6) | 120° |
| octagon (8) | 135° |
| decagon (10) | 144° |
| dodecagon (12) | 150° |
Exterior angles
Make one side of a polygon longer, past the corner, with a ruler. The angle between this longer line and the next side is called an exterior angle, or outside angle. The exterior angle and the inside angle at the same corner sit on a straight line, so together they make 180°.
Now imagine walking all the way round the edge of a polygon. At every corner you turn by the exterior angle. When you are back at the start, facing the same way as before, you have made exactly one full turn. So the exterior angles add up to 360°. This is true for every polygon, whatever its number of sides.
Remember
The exterior angles of any polygon add up to 360°.
This is for shapes whose corners all point outwards, like every shape in this lesson. In a regular polygon, each exterior angle is 360° ÷ n, and the inside angle is 180° minus the exterior angle.
Example 4
What is each exterior angle of a regular hexagon?
- The exterior angles add up to 360°.
- There are 6 equal ones: 360° ÷ 6 = 60°.
- Check with the inside angle: 120° + 60° = 180°.
Answer: 60°
You can also go backwards. If you know one exterior angle of a regular polygon, you can find how many sides it has. Ask how many of those angles fit into 360°.
Example 5
Each exterior angle of a regular polygon is 24°. How many sides does it have?
- All the exterior angles together make 360°.
- Number of angles: 360° ÷ 24° = 15.
- Check: 15 × 24 = 360.
Answer: 15 sides
Try it yourself
1.A four-sided shape has angles of 70°, 110° and 100°. What is the fourth angle?
Show the answer
80°
70 + 110 + 100 = 280, and 360° − 280° = 80°.
2.What do the inside angles of a shape with 11 sides add up to?
Show the answer
1620°
It splits into 11 − 2 = 9 triangles, and 9 × 180° = 1620°.
3.What is each exterior angle of a regular nonagon (9 sides)?
Show the answer
40°
360° ÷ 9 = 40°. It fits with the inside angle: 140° + 40° = 180°.
4.This is a regular dodecagon (12 sides). How big is each inside angle?
Show the answer
150°
The sum is 10 × 180° = 1800°, and 1800° ÷ 12 = 150°. Or: each exterior angle is 360° ÷ 12 = 30°, and 180° − 30° = 150°.
5.Each exterior angle of a regular polygon is 20°. How many sides does it have?
Show the answer
18
360° ÷ 20° = 18, so there are 18 exterior angles and 18 sides.
6.Each inside angle of a regular polygon is 144°. How many sides does it have?
Show the answer
10
Each exterior angle is 180° − 144° = 36°, and 360° ÷ 36° = 10. It is a regular decagon.
