Days and calendars

What day it will be in 10 days, which day was yesterday if tomorrow is Friday, months, leap years and dates.

The days of the week go round and round in the same order: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and then Monday again. Because the pattern repeats every 7 days, you can find the day of the week 10 days, 100 days or even 1,000 days from now without counting them one by one. The same idea helps with dates in a month, with the lengths of the months and with leap years. You only need one division and a little care.

Seven days make a full circle

Think of the seven days written around a circle. Every 7 steps you come back to the day you started on. So 7 days from Tuesday is Tuesday, 14 days from Tuesday is Tuesday, and 70 days from Tuesday is Tuesday too. Whole weeks never change the day.

That means only the days left over after the whole weeks matter. When you divide a number by 7, the part left over is called the remainder. For example, 10 = 7 + 3, so 10 days is 1 whole week and a remainder of 3 days.

Remember

Divide the number of days by 7. Throw away the whole weeks. Count only the remainder.

The remainder is always a number from 0 to 6. A remainder of 0 means the same day of the week.

DaysWhole weeksRemainder
101 week (7 days)3
304 weeks (28 days)2
507 weeks (49 days)1
10014 weeks (98 days)2
36552 weeks (364 days)1

What day will it be in so many days?

  1. Divide the number of days by 7 and find the remainder.
  2. Start on today and count the remainder forward, one day at a time.
  3. For days in the past, count the remainder backward instead.

Example 1

Today is Tuesday. What day will it be in 45 days?

  1. 45 = 42 + 3, and 42 days is exactly 6 weeks.
  2. The 6 weeks bring you back to Tuesday.
  3. Count 3 days forward: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.

Answer: Friday

Example 2

Today is Thursday. What day will it be in 1,000 days?

  1. 7 × 142 = 994, so 1,000 days is 142 weeks and 1000 − 994 = 6 days.
  2. The 142 weeks bring you back to Thursday.
  3. Count 6 days forward: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.

Answer: Wednesday

Example 3

Today is Wednesday. What day was it 17 days ago?

  1. 17 = 14 + 3, and 14 days is 2 weeks.
  2. Count 3 days back: Tuesday, Monday, Sunday.

Answer: Sunday

Yesterday, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow

Some puzzles do not tell you today. They say "if tomorrow is Friday" or "the day before yesterday was Thursday". The safe method is always the same: find today first, then answer the question from today.

WordsSteps from today
the day before yesterday2 days back
yesterday1 day back
today0
tomorrow1 day forward
the day after tomorrow2 days forward

Example 4

The day after tomorrow is Sunday. What day was yesterday?

  1. The day after tomorrow is 2 days forward, so today is 2 days before Sunday.
  2. Today is Friday.
  3. Yesterday is 1 day before Friday.

Answer: Thursday

Dates in the same month

Dates that are 7 apart always fall on the same day of the week. If the 1st is a Monday, then the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th are Mondays too. To find the day of any other date, find how many days lie between the two dates by subtracting.

Example 5

The 1st of a month is a Tuesday. What day of the week is the 25th?

  1. The 25th is 25 − 1 = 24 days after the 1st.
  2. 24 = 21 + 3: 3 weeks and 3 days.
  3. Count 3 days forward from Tuesday: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.

Answer: Friday

How long are the months?

Seven months have 31 days, four months have 30 days, and February has 28 days, or 29 in a leap year.

DaysMonths
31January, March, May, July, August, October, December
30April, June, September, November
28 or 29February

A classic trick question asks how many months have at least 28 days. The answer is all 12, because every month has 28 days or more. People answer 1 because they think only of February. Read the words "at least" carefully.

Because the longest month has 31 days, which is 4 weeks and 3 days, one month can have at most 5 Fridays (or 5 of any other day). In a 31-day month, three days of the week appear 5 times. A February of 28 days has exactly 4 of every day.

Leap years

The Earth takes about 365 and a quarter days to go round the Sun. To keep the calendar in step, we add one extra day, February 29, about every 4 years. A year with that extra day is called a leap year. It has 366 days.

Remember

A year is a leap year if it can be divided by 4. But a year ending in 00 is a leap year only if it can be divided by 400.

2000 and 2024 are leap years. 1900 and 2100 are not.

Example 6

Mia was born on February 29, 2004. Up to March 1, 2028, how many times has February 29 come again?

  1. The next leap years are 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024 and 2028.
  2. Count them: that is 6 years.
  3. Check with a count: from 2008 to 2028 is 2028 − 2008 = 20 years, 20 ÷ 4 = 5 jumps, and 5 jumps visit 5 + 1 = 6 years.

Answer: 6 times

Try it yourself

  1. 1.Today is Thursday. What day will it be in 20 days?

    Show the answer

    Wednesday

20 = 14 + 6, so count 6 days forward from Thursday: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.

  2. 2.The day before yesterday was Monday. What day is the day after tomorrow?

    Show the answer

    Friday

Today is 2 days after Monday, so today is Wednesday. The day after tomorrow is 2 days after that: Friday.

  3. 3.The 5th of a month is a Sunday. What day of the week is the 30th?

    Show the answer

    Thursday

The 30th is 30 − 5 = 25 days later, which is 3 weeks and 4 days. 4 days after Sunday is Thursday.

  4. 4.Today is Saturday. What day will it be in 200 days?

    Show the answer

    Wednesday

    7 × 28 = 196, so 200 days is 28 weeks and 4 days. 4 days after Saturday is Wednesday.

  5. 5.How many months of the year have exactly 30 days?

    Show the answer

    4

April, June, September and November. Seven months have 31 days and February has 28 or 29.

  6. 6.Is 2100 a leap year?

    Show the answer

    No

It can be divided by 4, but it ends in 00 and cannot be divided by 400, so it is not a leap year.
