Adding and subtracting in your head

Add and subtract two-digit numbers in your head by splitting them into tens and ones, and find doubles and halves fast.

You add and subtract in your head every day: the change from a shop, the minutes until the bus, the points in a card game. You do not need paper for numbers under 100. You only need one simple idea: split each number into its tens and its ones, work with each part, and put them back together. This page shows the plain method first, then a few quick tricks, and also how to double and halve a number fast.

Tens and ones

Every two-digit number is made of two parts. A digit is one of the signs 0 to 9. In 47, the digit 4 counts tens and the digit 7 counts ones. So 47 is 4 tens and 7 ones, or 40 + 7.

NumberTensOnesSplit
272720 + 7
454540 + 5
838380 + 3
646460 + 4

Tens are easy to add, because you only add the tens digits and put a zero after them: 20 + 40 = 60, just like 2 + 4 = 6. That is why we split.

Adding two-digit numbers

Remember

Add the tens. Add the ones. Then add the two results.

When the ones make 10 or more, that extra ten joins the tens.

  1. Add the tens digits, as tens.
  2. Add the ones digits.
  3. Add the two answers together.

Example 1

What is 27 + 45?

  1. Tens: 20 + 40 = 60.
  2. Ones: 7 + 5 = 12.
  3. Together: 60 + 12 = 72.

Answer: 72

Example 2

What is 56 + 19?

  1. Tens: 50 + 10 = 60.
  2. Ones: 6 + 9 = 15.
  3. Together: 60 + 15 = 75.

Answer: 75

Subtracting two-digit numbers

For subtraction, keep the first number whole and take the second number away in two small jumps: first its tens, then its ones.

Remember

Take away the tens first. Then take away the ones.

Example 3

What is 82 − 37?

  1. Split 37 into 30 + 7.
  2. Take away 30: 82 − 30 = 52.
  3. Take away 7: 52 − 7 = 45.
  4. Check by adding back: 45 + 37 = 82. Correct.

Answer: 45

When the second jump crosses a ten, it helps to do it in two parts. To take 7 from 52, first take 2 to reach 50, then 5 more to reach 45.

Example 4

What is 100 − 64?

  1. Count up from 64 to 100 instead.
  2. From 64 to 70 is 6.
  3. From 70 to 100 is 30.
  4. Altogether: 6 + 30 = 36.

Answer: 36

Doubles

To double a number means to add it to itself, or multiply it by 2. Double 7 is 14. To double a bigger number, double the tens and the ones on their own, then add.

Example 5

What is double 37?

  1. Double 30 is 60.
  2. Double 7 is 14.
  3. Together: 60 + 14 = 74.

Answer: 74

Double 48 works the same way: double 40 is 80, double 8 is 16, and 80 + 16 = 96. A three-digit number can be split into hundreds as well: double 125 is double 100 plus double 25, so 200 + 50 = 250.

Halves

To halve a number means to split it into two equal parts, or divide it by 2. Halving undoes doubling: half of 74 is 37 because double 37 is 74. Split the number into parts that are easy to halve.

Example 6

What is half of 86?

  1. Split 86 into 80 + 6.
  2. Half of 80 is 40.
  3. Half of 6 is 3.
  4. Together: 40 + 3 = 43.

Answer: 43

Example 7

What is half of 130?

  1. Split 130 into 100 + 30.
  2. Half of 100 is 50.
  3. Half of 30 is 15.
  4. Together: 50 + 15 = 65.

Answer: 65

Try it yourself

  1. 1.What is 48 + 37?

    Show the answer

    85

    Tens: 40 + 30 = 70. Ones: 8 + 7 = 15. Together: 70 + 15 = 85.

  2. 2.What is 73 − 48?

    Show the answer

    25

    Take away 40: 73 − 40 = 33. Then take away 8: 33 − 8 = 25. Check: 25 + 48 = 73.

  3. 3.What is 100 − 27?

    Show the answer

    73

    Count up from 27: 3 to reach 30, then 70 to reach 100. 3 + 70 = 73.

  4. 4.What is double 68?

    Show the answer

    136

    Double 60 is 120 and double 8 is 16, so double 68 is 120 + 16 = 136.

  5. 5.What is half of 158?

    Show the answer

    79

    Split 158 into 140 + 18. Half of 140 is 70 and half of 18 is 9, so the answer is 79. Check: 79 + 79 = 158.
